The Story of Glassalen
Glassalen in Tivoli – History and Architecture
Restaurant Glassalen is located in one of Tivoli’s most iconic buildings, with a history dating back to 1863. Originally built as a concert and assembly hall, it became a cultural hub where music, culture, and entertainment came together in the heart of Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed during World War II in 1944 but was rebuilt in 1946 with a groundbreaking design that continues to impress today.
Poul Henningsen’s Architectural Vision
The reconstruction of Glassalen was led by the legendary Danish architect and designer Poul Henningsen (PH), globally renowned for his iconic PH lamps and revolutionary lighting concepts. With Glassalen, PH created an architectural masterpiece that perfectly blended functionality and aesthetics. The building’s distinctive octagonal shape and striking glass panels reflect Henningsen’s unique ability to create timeless design solutions where light and space take center stage.

Glassalen and The Paul – Paul Cunningham’s Michelin Adventure
From 2003 to 2011, Glassalen was home to the iconic gourmet restaurant The Paul, founded by award-winning chef Paul Cunningham. With its creative cuisine and unique approach to modern gastronomy, The Paul quickly gained recognition, earning a Michelin star in 2004, which it retained until its closure in 2011.
Paul Cunningham’s menu at The Paul was defined by a playful combination of classic craftsmanship and experimental flavors, making the restaurant a culinary destination in Copenhagen. Guests from all over the world visited Glassalen to experience Cunningham’s visionary culinary universe in Tivoli’s historic setting.
The Paul left a lasting legacy in the history of Glassalen, establishing itself as one of the most remarkable restaurants in Tivoli’s rich gastronomic heritage.
A New Chapter – Restaurant Glassalen
With deep respect for Glassalen’s historical heritage and iconic design, we are now opening Restaurant Glassalen. Our goal is to merge the site’s rich history with modern gastronomy and Scandinavian design. Inspired by PH’s design philosophy, we aim to create a restaurant where atmosphere and exceptional culinary experiences come together in perfect harmony.
We look forward to continuing Glassalen’s story and welcoming our guests to a unique dining experience in the heart of Tivoli.
